MUTINY STUDIOS NEWS

U.S. Elevator Gets a Lift from a Rolling Stone Magazine

That blog title is maybe a little too punny... But we are excited! Our friends U.S. Elevator have had their inaugural album reviewed in Rolling Stone Magazine. And they dug it! Of course they did. It's a killer album. You can read it word for word right here.

I love opening up that link and seeing the Mutiny album artwork right up top. We have been fortunate to have the trust of Johnny Irion and company from the get go. Working with them has been great. Can't wait to see these guys touring again. Jump on the bandwagon with us, it'll be groovy.

Here in Portland, we are anxiously awaiting the arrival this week of Lolipop Records artist Dante Elephante. They will be playing the Bunk Bar on Friday 1/22. Local post-punk band Talkative will open. That's your weekly Mutiny Best Bet for PDX.

I've Got a Tour! Now how do I get people to show up?

So, you want to be a super rock star! You are booking your tour in the quiet days of January, getting the time off work you need, kicking the tires of your tour vehicle. Maybe putting the finishing touches on a new recording. These days a band can book their own tour by spending hours online connecting with venues. You can have a great tour schedule and an amazing product to show off on stage, but there's still a missing piece. How will you let folks now that you are coming to town?

First off, get the attention of crowds who already show up at the venues you are playing. No matter how many TVs are blaring at the bar. No matter how many people are staring into their phones. Posters still catch people's attention. If you don't show up on the walls of the venue, you will miss out on the audience that is already there. There's a catch though. If you're already famous, all you have to do is put up your band name and a date and fans will mark their calendars. But for most of us trying to make a name in a new town, that won't work. And if you pump out low quality artwork, you can actually do damage to your reputation before anyone has even heard your music. I bet you've looked at posters and said to yourself, "That is awful. I never want to hear their music." Well, maybe that's a bit harsh, but you get the point. Don't predispose people to dismissing your music with bad art.

We've been at this game for years. We've heard from fans how they recognize and appreciate their favorite band's artwork and posters. It creates an identity that sticks with them, and when they see it, even out of the corner of their eye, they will take note. With a Mutiny poster, we also prepare a digital version that is suitable for sharing on social media and your web page. From there, we can turn it into a hand-printed, limited-edition, numbered and signed, piece of art for your merch booth. Or, we can take some of those design elements and turn them into a cool t-shirt or tote bag.

If you've made the effort to put your shows in local online event listings, then you know that listings with images get more views. Maybe you have a high-stakes show at a larger venue. If it's time to purchase a print ad in a local weekly, we can translate your tour poster for that use too! It can go on and on, but it starts with quality artwork made by people who have been doing this for years.

Now you may be asking yourself, can I afford these services? But I ask you, can you afford not to? Going on tour is painful if you play to empty rooms. Shit happens! Everyone plays to empty houses at times, but you've got to give yourself the best chance at success. It won't do your music and bandmates a bit of good to go on the road for 2,000 miles to have played to 20 people. Posters and promo are not the only part of the puzzle, but they are huge part of it. Merry and I have been in bands for years and years, we know how tight budgets are and we are happy to talk with you to give you the best deal possible. Give me a shout on our contacts page or email brian [at] mutinysb.com and let's get the conversation going.

It has been a very generous welcome for us here in Portland. We've seen a slew of really satisfying performances over the last few weeks. The music in this town is on a higher level. The mighty Morgan Geer of Drunken Prayer was in town last week from Asheville, NC, playing a string of shows which started with The Next Waltz at The Alberta Rose Theater and ended in a tightly packed living room with a powerfully intimate solo performance. The Mutineers were delighted to share the stage for a show as well. Poster for the short tour by Mutiny :)

Coming soon: Screen printed poster for Vacilando's upcoming gig at the Doug Fir Lounge here in Portland. Numbered prints available at the show. Poster design by Tiny Little Hammers. Printing by Mutiny.

Mutiny Studios is now in Portland, OR

Hello friends. We've been off-line for a few weeks as we moved our business and office to Portland's southeast side. As some of you know, Merry is an Oregon native who grew up 30 minutes west of the city before getting her degree from U of O in Eugene and eventually living in PDX for years. This is something of a homecoming for her! But it's not about the past. This move was about our future. Portland has been known as a hotbed of indie music for years. We've had the pleasure of working with many area bands and businesses since our inception, like And And And, Loch Lomond, Wild Ones, Tender Loving Empire, Fernando, and lots more. It's exciting to be among all the talent and culture of the Rose City. In our first two weeks back in town we have already seen some great shows. We caught John Shepski solo, and then again with his captivating band Vacilando. We stumbled upon a free show at the Hawthorne Tender Loving Empire store headlined by Wild Ones. Checked out some acoustic punk on the side stage of the Swinging Utters gig. And we even managed to score an acoustic Mutineers set with the very talented Matthew Zeltzer. We are already acquainted with the horrors of FOMO (fear of missing out) and have accepted it as a natural state of being in a place with pages upon pages of music events in our weekly paper EVERY WEEK!

We will continue our presence in Santa Barbara with our custom posters and booking. You'll be seeing a poster for U.S. Elevator's upcoming album release show at Soho making the rounds shortly. And more great Mutiny shows at Seven Bar and Kitchen. A HUGE THANK YOU to all the folks at Seven Bar and at The Brewhouse for hosting our going away parties. You have all made us feel really special.

When your band, venue, label, or business is in need of design and custom printing, drop us a line through our contact page. Cruise through our online poster and art gallery to see the Mutiny Studios aesthetic. We love to talk with folks about their vision and projects.

Three years in the making, Leave The Radio On features a virtual who’s who of Portland’s finest musicians, including Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey as well as members of M.Ward, Elliott Smith, Richmond Fontaine and The Delines.

"As is to be expected, it's an engrossing collection of experimental, imaginative rock and folk, with flame tinged edges of 60's garage and American-style psychedelia"
--Portland Mercury-Ned Lannamann Aug 27 2015.

Come check out his full band as they stop in at Seven Bar & Kitchen on their west coast tour.
